Carbella BLM Recreation Area, North of Gardiner, Montana


I'm camped in a BLM area north of Gardiner. It's a boat ramp on the Yellowstone River with a bunch of camping spots. I'm right along the edge of the bluff above the river. I can see the water from my window. The camping is free.





When I got here Wednesday, the idea was to drive through the park on Thursday and get home on Friday, unless I could find something to keep me occupied over the Labor Day weekend. Well, I vound something.

The Junction Butte wolf pack has been active in the Lamar Valley the last few days, so that occupies my mornings.

For evenings, I remembered that several years ago I had visited a spot near here where grizzleys would come down and feed in a pasture. I went up Thursday and, sure enough, 6 of them appeared. Last night, we had 4 and a moose.

This morning, on the way back to camp, a fox almost ran out into the road in front of me. I stopped and it then started up the road on the shoulder. I followed taking pictures through the windshield:



And then it found something in the road to investigate:



So, I'll be here at least until Labor Day Monday and, possibly after that.

    Sounds like you scored at Yellowstone! Great way to end your trip. I've enjoyed traveling with you this summer via your blog -- thanks for sharing your trip.

The general pattern of each day is go see the den on the morning, back to camp for lunch and chores and whatnot around noon and then back out in the afternoon to just see what I can see. Along the way, I'm working to get the phone/scope combination working better. Some progress had been made. If I'm not zooming too much, I can get this: From maybe 200 yards. But, large zooms are still not very good. Here is the wolf den with the alpha female sleeping alongside. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 Mammoth Campground, Yellowstone It was a short day. After spending a chilly morning watching the den: I headed back to camp for lunch. Along the way, I found a black bear – walking across the Yellowstone River bridge! I took that picture through the windshield just as he was leaing the bridge. All the people behaved. The cars coming the other way stopped and waited for him to cross while the line I was in stayed well enough behind that he just walked all the way – right down the centerline. After lunch, I took a nap – for 3 hours! That kind of did my day in.
