Camp Run-a-Muck, Hyder, Alaska
It's been 4 days since I
got here and not much has happened. Each day I go up to the viewing
platform about 3 miles above town and each day no bears. There are
lots of fish – more than anybody's seen in 10 years, but not a
single bear has come to feed on them since I've been here.
Those gray oblong shapes
lined up with the stream are not rocks, they are all salmon. Each
one 2-3 feet long. The stream is like that for the next 200 yards.
Nobody knows why the
bears are not feeding on them . Stories like it's been to hot and
they are up high abound. My theory is that this is a banner year for
fish and all the streams are full. They can eat all they want and
not deal with the road or the platform and the associated people.
In the meantime, I did
see a bear on the river just outside of town:
And others have seen them
on the road, so they are around.
I drove up to see Salmon
Glacier yesterday. It's a 20 mile drive up a good gravel road. The
drive is worth it:
Along the way, a marmot
posed in the road for me:
Today is gray and gloomy
and chilly, but the scenery is still spectacular:
I'm here till Tuesday,
maybe the bears will show by then, but I'm not hopeful.
